Commissioned by the Light Matter Trio (Clara Kim, violin; Joann Whang, cello; Karl Larson, piano)
First performance: April 25, 2018
For this piece I felt compelled to explore space between sound and pitches, and to use microtones and extended string techniques to imply music that was coming in and out of focus. I imagined music that was perhaps moving towards and away from the listener, and "flanging" from a hazy, indeterminate state to a clearly defined one. The title of this piece - Air, Ear, Ire, Hour, Aura - was something that I made up as a "sonic mnemonic" during the composition process, and it proved helpful as a reminder to me of how I wanted the sounds to blossom into clarity before fading back into the ether.
